Keeping Storage Sanitary in Colorado Springs

Admin | May 15, 2020

When using your Colorado Springs storage unit at Stor-Mor, you can’t discount the benefits of keeping your unit — and the items inside it — clean. Here are the top three tips from Stor-Mor for keeping the items in your self-storage unit clean.

Take Advantage of Plastic

Plastic is always easier to clean than cardboard, canvas or fabrics. And, plastic does a better job of keeping dust and dirt out. When possible, opt for plastic storage containers over cardboard boxes. Or, you can always cover your cardboard boxes with plastic sheeting to provide an extra layer of protection.

This same plastic sheeting or tarp material can be used to cover up larger items like furniture and keep dust and debris off your personal possessions.

Organize and Categorize

At your Colorado Springs self-storage facility, you might think that organization is only important in a large storage unit, but even in smaller spaces like compact storage units, and organization is key.

Categorize items before placing them into storage. Some people find it helpful to categorize similar items together like towels in one box, bedding in another, and electronics in another. Others prefer to categorize based on the final location of the items in their home or office. One set of boxes is for the master bedroom, another for the living room, others for the kitchen, and so on.

However, you choose to categorize your personal items, organizing them inside the unit is just as important. Using shelves or tables to store items as opposed to stacking everything on the ground helps you make the most of your space and keeps your things clean. On a raised surface, your items will be protected from dust or dirt that gathers on the ground.

Clean as You Go

One of the best ways to keep items in storage clean is to clean as you go. Too often, individuals only clean their items as they empty their storage units.

Instead, keep a basic supply of cleaning materials in your unit. Some items you could have on hand could include:

  • Disinfecting wipes
  • Broom
  • Dustpan
  • Paper towels
  • Dish soap
  • Small bucket for holding water
  • Trash bags

Before you move items into your unit, give the floor and shelves a light dusting. Starting out clean makes cleaning easier as you go. Each time you visit your storage unit to retrieve or add items over your storage period, take 5 to 10 minutes to lightly dust or wipe down the things in your unit. Sweep the floor, and take any trash away with you.

With these three tips in place, you’ll be prepared to keep your items clean and make the most of your self-storage experience.
